It is one of many deepwater ocean trenches formed by the geologic process of subduction(this occurs when a plate topped by oceanic crust is subducted beneath another plate topped by oceanic crust)
The Challenger Deep is the lowest point in the Mariana Trench, a gap between tectonic plates that stretches 1,500 miles along the western Pacific, and is thought to be the deepest chasm in all the world's ocean. The deepest point of the Mariana Trench is also the deepest point on Earth at around 11,000m.

It is interesting to know that director and explorer James Cameron  ,recently fulfilled his longtime goal of reaching the bottom in a manned craft in the site north of Guam is  and he is the first man to reach there!!!!!The New Britain Trench -- which Cameron visited as a test-run for Mariana -- which at 8,200 meters deep is only 2,700 meters shallower than Challenger Deep.
But he saw that the life there was very different. The trench bottom was home to an array of sea cucumbers, sea anemones, jellyfish, comb jellyfish, and giant amphipods.

UNKNOWN FACTS ABOUT MARIANA TRENCH

  • It is oldest seabeds in the world and it is about 180 millions years old.
  • The temperature of mariana Trench is about 1 deg to 4 deg which is near to freezing points, is unbearable to human beings.
  • Located at the depth of about 414 meter on the way to the Mariana Trench, there is Daikoku volcano which is the source of one of the rarest phenomena on the planet. Here in the pit, called "pot", there is a lake of pure molten sulfur a seething black emulsion that is boiling at 187 degrees Celsius
  • Surprisingly, man has explored beyond the distance of the light years into the outer space, but only 5 percent of the seabed has been explored and mapped till now the remaining still remains unexplored.
